- The New York Times article about Nidal Hasan. This may just be me projecting my own ish, but I can’t read this without thinking: ‘I bet this guy was a closet-case.’ Or even if he wasn’t/isn’t, the point remains: the world is filled with men who are driven to violence/insanity/extreme forms of antisocial behavior because they can’t express themselves sexually, which is a real cost of our stupid civilization in 2k9. It’s time to start connecting the dots between rampant homophobia and unhinged lunacy, because one definitely feeds the other. Oh and guess where TONS of closet-cases end up because they think that it will deflect suspicion or perhaps ‘cure’ them: well yeah, the church, but also the fucking army. (Ok, I’ll get back to your regularly scheduled lolcats now!)

The Helsinki Train Station in 1984. If anyone has been to Cranbrook, the high school/art academy outside of Detroit (which I recommend highly, if you’re ever in the vicinity!) you might recognize the similarity between the Helsinki train station and the Cranbrook campus, e.g. the towers are almost identical. Both were designed by Finnish modernist Eliel Saarinen, whose son Eero — one of the first ‘fac brats’ (<3 u) at Cranbrook! — went on to design the St. Louis Arch, the TWA terminal at JFK and a bunch of other kick-ass mid-century modern furniture.

You guys, Norbit was an absolutely terrible movie.

OMG, this was EXACTLY what was going through my mind when I read the review. (I didn’t see Norbit, though, so I refrained from posting. And I’m lazy. And ambivalent.) But for some reason, though, I seem to remember a lot of folks being kinda unhappy about it vis-a-vis gay stereotypes, too? (Or maybe I’m just confusing it with 98 percent of Hollywood releases in the last __ years?)

And maybe it’s not many, because we’ve driven so many away; players who didn’t want to be teased, shunned, and worse, a target for on-ice violence. Who knows how many great players hung up their skates in favor of some lesser talent, strictly to find acceptance and peace of mind.

So it’s time.

It’s time to acknowledge we’ve been unfair to the gay community, that the culture of our sport can be misogynistic, homophobic and cruel. More important, it’s time to make a stand that we want it to change.

I know I can’t take back the words I said during my time as a hockey player, but this is a start. I think if you asked any minority group that has won the rights and freedoms that all people deserve, they’d agree on one thing about change — it’s better late than never.
