Zephyr: Do you think that there will be a day when ‘edgy/alternative’ sites that are not 100-percent gay but have a significant gay user-base will be sensitive to the depressingly heteronormative implications of their advertising gestures (even when such gestures are maybe delivered somewhat ironically)? I guess at the moment I’m specifically thinking of that ‘Ladies can’t resist’ caption under the Tumblr tee-shirt ad. Maybe it’s meant to be clever or funny because the Tumblr bro is not ‘Hollywood handsome,’ but in a way it’s sooo conventional and kind of double-standardy, like all of those mnstrm movies and sit-coms that basically feature heavy bros (who I tend to think are hotter than skinny dudes as a rule, for the record) but always have these runway-model (i.e., anorexic) wives/girlfriends, and so on? I think that until people acknowledge that accepting gay people in society means that on an individual basis they might be found attractive to someone of the same gender (and not getting all bent out of shape about it or preemptively mocking it), we’re really just spinning our wheels.

Dante: I’m fascinated by a piece of lint floating through the air right now, only about six inches below the ceiling. If you watch it for long enough without blinking, you might be reminded of a leaf that will never quite land.

I think we can all acknowledge one true thing.

Despite the fact that Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker box mixes are full of crap and dye and whoa you use a lot of oil, cupcakes made from these mixes are better than nearly any and every bakery out there.

It just is what it is.

This makes me nostalgic for Stir’n’Frost, which was a cake staple for me during the 80s. Smaller than a cake, bigger than a cupcake: THOSE THINGS ROCKED! (I think they changed the recipe at some point, though, and they got kinda nasty?)

I got a semi distressing phone call just as I was passing The Bakery at the corner of Myrtle and Vanderbilt (its name is actually The Bakery, I checked) and after I got off the phone I went in to see if they had their very good hot chocolate. They didn’t because it’s too warm out, but they did have cupcakes. Normally I am not a huge fan of cupcakes (INTERNET SACRILEGE!) — I feel like the ratio of frosting to cake is always off; layer cake is an elegant solution to the problem of getting bites that are all cake/all frosting, and why mess with perfection? But by the time the lady behind the counter had finished describing all the flavors to me I felt obligated, not unpleasantly, to buy one. The rows were arrayed together in the case so that their colors evoked the colors of autumn leaves: chocolate with peanut butter frosting, spice cake with cream cheese frosting, and lemon. I got the spice cake. The cream cheese frosting had tiny autumn-leaf sprinkles. The cake was dry and dense and a little gummy (in a good way) and the frosting was tangy, not too rich or sweet but of course very rich and sweet. The whole thing was small enough that it didn’t leave me feeling sick or sleepy. I still have to deal with my problems but at least I got to eat something that I loved today.

I totally agree that most bakery-bought cupcakes don’t really taste as great as they look, but (and this is not a sponsored reblog, although I wish it was) I will say I’m kind of addicted to the chocolate cupcakes from Fresh Direct, especially if you pop them in the microwave for 8 seconds before eating. (I wish I could say these cupcakes were not often the highlight of my day, but that would be a lie.)

I can remember a time, me and a high school buddy walking in the weird piss-yellow glow of bad mass-manufactured street lamps in Nowhere’sville, USA, smoking ciggies and drinking illicit rotgut and he says to me he says, “Matt, sometimes I wish that when I walked around like this there would be a soundtrack behind me. Not like listening to headphones, like everyone could hear it. Like in a movie. What would your song be?”

And that’s kinda how it felt tonight, steel and concrete and glass of the soothingly bland perma-70s downtown DC architecture shaking to it’s very core at the decidedly non-plaintive wail of those old Bomb Squad tracks backing the tunefully gruff sledgehammer of a Chuck D vocal that was always twice as hard.

No matter how many new reality programs he needs to plug, no matter how many dubious claims to the creation of the pacifier-sucking trend of the high flattop cut, no matter how embarrassingly yet earnestly he invokes The Lord Our God; Flavor Flav remains the consummate showman. Chuck called him the original hypeman, and that’s true, but it almost damns with faint praise. He knows every line he ever laid down, every line Chuck did. He could step in like an understudy if need be. In fact, you get the idea that he can and would take over for anyone of the many players on that stage and no one would miss a beat.

Really one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while. It moved, it clicked. They toyed with the audience’s energy like pros — squelching the insanity-groove of the original “By the Time I Get to Arizona” track to let a reflective version of “Ball of Confusion” bubble below them; launching into the original Isley’s “Fight the Power” at the end of their own sending the fever pitch into a mass convulsion when one of the S1Ws started channeling Ron; sampling Trouble Funk to remind everyone where we were; talking everyone through imperceptible stage cues; making a DJ spotlight hype again.

Flav seemed to be intentionally overstaying his welcome at the end of both shows tonight. Challenging you, seeing how far you’d stay. And do you know? Fuck a metro or a Wednesday night. He made you want to hear every word like it was a gift.

This is awesome.

Matthew reminded me that Gilmore Girls is not on that list. But Undeclared is? The list-making cadre is 2/9 women, but it seems a lot lower.

Also Weeds. And True Blood (for awesome camp appeal; srsly, were there any geighs in that cadre?). And Angel (which was better than Firefly, especially in Seasons 3/4 — miss u, Lorne). And speaking of JW, why wasn’t Buffy in the top three? And I don’t know if they included Canada, but Slings & Arrows was great. I’d also include Torchwood if I wasn’t still pissed about the way they killed off Ianto.
